Lenny Rus of our tax department recently attended a meeting between the Comptroller of Maryland's office and the Maryland Association of CPAs' state tax committee. He came away with some key points and wanted to pass them along to you.
Restaurants and caterers
Alcohol sales tax audits will begin next year. Businesses are having a tough time implementing the new 9 percent sales tax. Read more about Maryland's alcohol sales tax hike here.
Nonprofits
The state is targeting nonprofit organizations for unclaimed property. Read more about how to avoid unclaimed property liability here.
Construction and landscaping companies
Maryland is targeting construction and landscaping companies for joint audits for sales and use tax, withholding tax and income tax. Twelve audits are scheduled for this year.
