Don’t Fall for IRS Phone Scams

By: Carrie Letsch

Several of our partners and clients have gotten phone calls from people posing as IRS agents. With April 15 right around the corner, this can be unnerving.

Imposters are calling more than 10,000 Americans each week, according to reports.

According to a press release issued by the IRS, the IRS will not:

  • Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill

  • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe

  • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card

  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone

  • Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying

What to Do If You Are Contacted

If you get a call from someone who claims to be with the IRS and asks for money, call the IRS at 800.829.1040. Or, call your CPA for guidance.
