All-Important Five-Star Quality Rating System Is a Key Concern for Maryland Skilled Nursing Facilities

Nearly half of owners, administrators and chief financial officers of Maryland skilled nursing facilities reported that the Five-Star Quality Rating System is one of their top concerns, according to our Maryland Skilled Nursing Facility Outlook Survey.

And rightfully so, as the rating system is highly influential when it comes to consumers researching and selecting a nursing facility for their loved ones. It is every administrator’s dream to achieve a five-star rating. On the flip side, it can be disastrous to have a one-star rating.

The Five-Star Quality Rating System, developed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, offers consumers a transparent look at data related to a skilled nursing facility’s health inspections, staffing and quality measures.

Recent Changes to the Five-Star Rating System Could Change Your Facility’s Rating

In 2016, CMS announced in a press release that five new skilled nursing quality measures will be added to the rating system.

The new measures, expected to shake up the overall ratings for many skilled nursing facilities, were fully phased into the Five-Star Rating System in 2017. The new measures, which look at successful discharges, emergency visits and re-hospitalizations, are based on both Medicare claims and data supplied by nursing homes.
