Audit Senior / Semi-Senior

Fairfax, VA | Baltimore, MD

If you are a career minded senior or supervisor, we have opportunities within our audit and accounting departments in our Baltimore and Virginia offices. We are seeking experienced seniors or supervisors to perform and serve as in-charge of audits, reviews and compilations for nonprofits, government contractors, manufacturers, long term care providers (nursing homes, assisted living facilities and continuing care retirement communities), construction contractors and professional service firms. The successful candidate will also prepare corresponding tax returns.

Managing engagements, training staff, and supervising staff are other key functions of the job. Must be willing to travel around the DMV to client sites. Occasional overnight travel out of town may be required.

The successful candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • 4 - 6 years of audit and accounting experience with a public accounting (CPA) firm, preferably in the following areas:
  1. Nonprofits, including Single Audits
  2. Employee benefit plans
  3. Government Contractors
  • Tax return preparation experience including 990, corporate, partnerships and individuals (a plus)
  • CPA certification
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills:
  • Microsoft Excel
  • CCH ProSystems Engagement (a plus)
  • CCH ProSystems FX or Access (a plus)
  • Independent self-starter able to work independently as well as with a team
  • Strong work ethic
  • Willing to provide excellent client service
  • Ability and willingness to train and supervise staff
  • Must be willing to travel primarily in the DMV, including some overnight stays out of town.

Government Contracts Accounting Services Manager / Consultant

Fairfax, VA

This position manages the operations for our GOVCON/SASS department and reports to two partners leading this practice group out of our Fairfax, Virginia location. The manager is responsible for both the accounting and advisory services performed for multiple government contractor, government grantees and small business clients. This position oversees client close processes, supervises all facets of operational accounting and financial package development, and directly interacts with client personnel. This position is responsible for working with department’s two partners to streamline processes and assign and manage staff work at the proper level. Their other responsibilities include ensuring the implementation of accounting best practices and compliance with federal and state and local tax laws, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) compliance, and internal controls.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing all aspects of the month end closing process including but not limited to account reconciliations and financial statement packages development.
  • Reviews and analyzes the monthly financial statements and determines reasons for monthly variance explanations.
  • Researches and prepares reports and graphics/charts as requested by the client or partner.
  • In conjunction with partner, assists in determining work assignments, priorities, and performance expectations for staff. Trains staff or clients on software, procedures, and reporting as needed.
  • Provides guidance on proper accounting treatment under GAAP and FAR and applicable agency supplemental guidance.
  • Provides additional services including budgeting, forecasting, cash flow analysis, and provisional rate development as needed.
  • Develops and maintains an understanding of each assigned client’s business and the accounting operations within them.
  • Recommends, designs, and implements any necessary department controls and procedures.
  • Communicates and coordinates with clients to ensure that all work is completed timely, accurately, and as promised.
  • Works with department partners to grow practice group through implementation of efficient processes, applications and leveraging of emerging technologies.


  • Requires strong supervisory, organizational, analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work with limited supervision and demonstrate the ability to manage and coach employees.
  • Executive level communication skills demonstrating the ability to extract relevant information from a large volume of data.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or degree in related field combined with relevant accounting experience.
  • CPA preferred
  • Minimum seven years’ experience in the government contracts accounting field with at least three years as a manager and preferably in providing back office support to government contractor clients.
  • Proficient in the use of multiple automated accounting system software and spreadsheet applications and able to train others as needed.
  • Strong understanding of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Strong understanding of Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), compliant accounting and billing systems.
  • Advanced understanding of general and subsidiary ledgers and financial statements.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple initiatives, client requirements, and staffing needs and issues
  • Strong project management skills including development and monitoring of engagement budgets
  • Proactive, innovative, adheres to deadlines, responsive to client and management requirements
  • Exhibits utmost discretion, strong ethics, positive attitude, and calm demeanor under pressure
  • Ability to be flexible and work in a fast-paced environment

Tax Manager or Supervisor


Gross Mendelsohn & Associates is seeking a CPA with at least six years of tax accounting experience with a public accounting firm. The successful candidate will review 1040, corporate and partnership returns, including estates and trusts. Experience with multi-state tax returns desired! Must have strong tax research skills. A master’s degree in tax or willingness to obtain (firm paid) is desirable. Experience with ProSystems Engagement and ProSystems FX is desired.

A willingness to train and mentor staff is required. This position requires a strong work ethic, outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, a great attitude and a willingness to do whatever it takes to serve our clients.

Accounting Paraprofessional

Fairfax, VA

We are looking for a full or part-time (32-40 hours a week) paraprofessional to provide write-up and other paraprofessional services to a variety of firm clients.


  • Minimum of Associates Degree in Accounting, BS in Accounting preferred
  • Minimum of five years of paraprofessional experience
  • Three years QuickBooks Pro and or QuickBooks On-line experience with high level knowledge of Accounts Payable, Receivable and Payroll transactions
  • Proficient in setting up QuickBooks accounts, including use of classes, job costing and budgeting functions
  • Familiarity or knowledge of other QuickBooks Pro and Intuit Payroll products desirable
  • QuickBooks Pro certification strongly desired (2015,2016, 2017)
  • Prior experience in CPA firm is strongly preferred
  • Proficient in Outlook, Excel, Word, and Acrobat Pro
  • Proficient in preparing work papers and reviewing supporting documents in a paperless environment
  • Solid communication, organizational and client service skills
  • Willingness to learn new applications and share knowledge with other staff

Paraprofessional Responsibilities:

  • Provide write-up services on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis to a variety of firm clients as needed
  • Setup QuickBooks data files from scratch and be able to customize to fit client industry and specialized reporting requirements
  • Train clients in setup and use of QuickBooks accounting software
  • Follow up with clients for information, forms, communicate critical deadlines to ensure timely completion of engagements
  • Ability to work independently with clients
  • Other paraprofessional services as assigned
  • Prepare 1099s, W-2s, BPOL, PPT and other forms for clients as needed
  • Limited travel to client sites when required for training or support

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Handle photocopying, scanning and filing of all necessary documents in electronic filing system
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned
