Yesterday, Maryland announced that the deadline for individual income state tax filings and payments will be extended from April 18, 2022 to July 15, 2022.

This extension applies to resident and nonresident individuals who are required to file a 2021 tax return in Maryland. The due date for individual returns from farmers and fishermen has also been extended from March 1, 2022 to July 15, 2022. This extension is automatic, and there is no filing or request required to take advantage of the extended deadline.

The deadline to request an extension to file 2021 individual tax returns has also been extended to July 15, 2022. If that extension request is approved, the comptroller will allow individual taxpayers to file returns by October 17, 2022.

Due dates for corporate, pass through entity and fiduciary income tax returns and payments are not affected by this extension.

This extension also doesn’t impact the due dates of quarterly estimated payments for the 2022 tax year.

What About Federal Returns?

As of January 20, 2022, the IRS hasn’t extended due dates for any federal returns for the 2021 tax year.
