Yesterday the Internal Revenue Service announced that the deadline for federal income tax filings and payments has been extended to May 17, 2021. The normal deadline is April 15.
"The IRS wants to continue to do everything possible to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities," IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. You can read the IRS’s full announcement about the extension here.
Note that the new deadline for federal tax filings and payments does not apply to estimated tax payments that are due on April 15; those remain due by that day.
The announcement about the federal extension comes just one week after Maryland extended its state income tax filing and payment deadline to July 15, 2021. As of now, Virginia’s income tax filing and payment deadline has not been extended; it’s still May 1 for most taxpayers.
