Virginia Governor Ralph Northam recently announced that Rebuild VA, the $70 million economic recovery fund launched in August, is expanding its eligibility criteria to allow more small businesses to apply.

Certain types of Virginia-based businesses and nonprofits whose normal operations were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic are eligible to receive grants of up to $10,000.

Here’s what you need to know about the Rebuild VA Grant Fund.

Who Is Eligible?

The Rebuild VA Grant Fund is a program to help small businesses and nonprofits whose normal operations were disrupted by COVID-19, including restaurants, brick and mortar retail, exercise and fitness facilities, personal care and personal grooming services, entertainment and public amusement establishments, and campgrounds.

Expanded business sectors are now eligible to apply; those sectors include small hotels and bed and breakfast lodging facilities along with the film industry companies supporting production in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Rebuild VA requires that businesses and nonprofit organizations must be in good standing, operate primarily in Virginia, have annual gross revenues of no more than $1.5 million, and have no more than 25 employees.

Applicants are not eligible for Rebuild VA funds if they have received money from any CARES Act program, PPP, EIDL or additional $600 unemployment insurance relief.

Which Expenses Are Eligible?

Rebuild VA funding can be for the following eligible expenses:

  • Payroll support, including paid sick, medical, or family leave and costs related to the continuation of group health care benefits during those periods of leave

  • Employee salaries

  • Mortgage payments, rent and utilities

  • Principal and interest payments for any business loans from national or state-chartered banking, savings and loan institutions or credit unions, that were incurred before or during the emergency

  • Eligible personal protective equipment, cleaning and disinfecting materials, or other working capital needed to address COVID-19 response
