Applications Now Open for Baltimore County Small Business Emergency Relief Grants Program

Applications opened today for Baltimore County’s Small Business Emergency Relief Grants Program. Here’s what you need to know about the $10 million COVID-19 relief fund and how to apply.

When Are Applications Due?

There is no due date specified for the grant. Applications, which opened May 11, will be considered on a first come, first served basis, with priority being given to women- and minority-owned (WBE and MBE) businesses. The $10 million fund is expected to run out quickly, so apply soon.

Who Is Eligible?

Baltimore County defines eligibility as: “a for-profit business with at least two non-owner employees that has not obtained other forms of federal or state COVID-19 assistance at the time of application will qualify if it can demonstrate a loss of revenue of at least 40 percent since the beginning of the Maryland shutdown.”

The program is aiming to award at least 25% of grant funds to WBEs and MBEs; these businesses will be given funding priority. In addition, businesses that have been unable to operate or are operating at a significantly reduced capacity will also be given funding priority.

How Must the Funds Be Used?

There are restrictions on how the funds can be used. Funds can be used only for payroll, operating expenses, business lease or rent payments, and inventory acquisition that is vital to the operation of the business. At least 30% of the funds must be used for payroll for employees who have no ownership in the business.

Funds cannot be used for capital improvements or personal expenses.

Are Nonprofits Eligible?

Nonprofits are not eligible for this grant.

How Much Can You Receive?

The Small Business Emergency Relief Grants Program, administered by the Department of Economic and Workforce Development, will award grants of up to $15,000 each to more than 650 Baltimore County-based small businesses.
